The Deep by Peter Benchley5/11/2023 ![]() ![]() Nick Noltt, a blue-eyed blond fellow who appears to have been cloned (clufsily) from Robert Redford's press clippings, plays Frank Hardy. While scuba diving off Bermuda, Jackie and Nick come upon the remains of a sunken vessel that turns out actually to be two. The opening yesterday of "The Deep" at Loew's State 2 and other theaters, as well as of "Exorcist II: The Heretic" (see separate review), mark the arrival of the silly season that more or less coincides with hot weather, out-of-control air-conditioning and asphalt pavements as luxuriously soft as deep-pile carpets."The Deep," which is even sillier than the Peter Benchley novel, recalls-though not to its own advantage-the sort of adventures Frank and Joe Hardy used to have on their summer vacations.Jacqueline Bisset, one of Cinema's natural splendors whether she's wearing a white evening dress composed by a poet or a soaping-wet T-shirt, plays the Joe Hardy role. ![]() Die Vertraute des Königs by Emma Campion5/11/2023 ![]()

Brief Summary of Book: Exit Strategy (The Murderbot Diaries, #4) by Martha Wells ![]() Olivia by Dorothy Strachey5/10/2023 ![]() ![]() ![]() “Lushly lays bare the intensity of infatuation and first love.” “Through the melodrama cuts the fresh frankness of Olivia’s all-consuming ardor, and in her Strachey captures perfectly the urgency, excitement, and fire of a first adult crush.” As they grow closer, their relationship is threatened by jealousy and rivalry, and the school year seems destined to end in tragedy. But Mademoiselle Julie's life is not as straightforward as Olivia imagines. Soon after her arrival, she finds herself falling under the spell of her beautiful and charismatic teacher, Mademoiselle Julie, who introduces her to art, literature, and fine cuisine. It tells the story of Olivia, a sixteen-year-old girl who is sent from England to a Parisian finishing school to broaden her education. The classic novel about a teenage girl's infatuation with her headmistress at a boarding school in nineteenth-century ParisĪ groundbreaking, passionate, and subtle story of first love, Olivia-based loosely on the author's own life-was first published in 1949 under a pseudonym. "Perfectly captures the breathless excitement of adolescent passion." -Sarah Waters, bestselling author of Fingersmith and Tipping the Velvet ![]() "I read Olivia many, many times, bought it for many of my friends, and consider it the inspiration for Call Me by Your Name." -André Aciman ![]() Looking good dead review5/10/2023 ![]() ![]() The baddies, who we won’t name for spoilers’ sake, do a great job accompanied by the sound design of Max Pappenheim. Whilst perhaps more light-hearted than James’ writing intended them to be, they run with it and have excellent chemistry. ![]() Playing the famous detective Grace is Harry Long, who delivers a sincere version of the character, accompanied by Leon Stewart and Gemma Stroyan as Branson and Bella respectively, who are quite the team. Fans of the series should be warned that Roy Grace becomes a side character in the play, with the Bryce family featuring as the main characters. Whilst condensing it for stage, it has made much of the plot quite predictable, though one twist for those non-familiar with the book does remain. The play in general, feels like a simplified version of James’ novel. The rest of the set is a simple yet effective home with a moveable police station which serves its purpose. ![]() ![]() Utilising this for the sinister moments allows the rest of the stage to be in darkness providing further atmosphere. The set is smartly used with the use of a backlit gauze providing maximum use of the stage at Cambridge Arts Theatre. Bought to the stage following the success of previous adaptations The Perfect Murder and Dead Simple is Looking Good Dead by Peter James, adapted by award-winning writer Shaun McKenna. ![]() Nothing but blackened5/10/2023 ![]() This was one of my most anticipated books of the season. ![]() To be fair, I didn’t pre-order Nothing But Blackened Teeth *only* because of that terrifyingly beautiful cover I found the summary to be equally enthralling. ![]() While this can mean missing out on great books just because their covers didn’t catch your eye, it can also mean choosing a book because of its amazing cover… and then being disappointed.
